875 Heron Sustainability Study

Exploring Opportunities to Enhance the Performance of a Modern Heritage complex

In support of the broader evolution of the Canada Revenue Agency Headquarters at 875 Heron Road, TRACE architectures acted as Prime Consultant for a sustainability study, to explore opportunities to enhance the energy efficiency and building system performance of this multi-building complex. Completed in 1970, the complex is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building, reflecting its modest but identifiable historic value. A notable challenge associated with the largest building within the complex was the extensive and continuous use of the cast-in-place concrete, and the entire complex acting as a thermal bridge to the interior, due to the concrete assemblies.

Key Aspects of the Study

  • Multiple building envelope upgrade strategies explored (windows and walls).
  • Thermal bridge studies to creatively address the significant heat loss through the envelope, especially within the largest building.
  • Building condition assessment (performance upgrades are best aligned with critical lifecycle projects).
  • Maintenance strategies for materials that are heritage character elements.

The study was part of a Federal Government pilot project exploring opportunities to improve energy performance

Completed in 2017, the report and its various contents were well received, with the lessons learned being applied to future projects and studies.
