TRACE architectures’ Sabina Barrett Joins the Rideau Lakes Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee (MHAC)

We are excited to have another team member actively involved in the Heritage Advisory Committees for the communities in which we work and live!

TRACE’s portfolio of work exemplifies our experience in navigating rural cultural heritage sites and landscapes and the Township of Rideau Lakes is no exception. Nestled between Kingston and Ottawa, the Township of Rideau Lakes is a living testament to the harmonious blend of cultural and natural heritage in Ontario. Central to this unique region is the historic Rideau Canal, weaving its way through picturesque landscapes and historic settlements.

Recognizing the urgent need to safeguard these valued heritage resources, the Township recently appointed Sabina Barrett to the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee (MHAC). Sabina’s interest in rural heritage, coupled with her considerable expertise in the heritage field, spanning from federal heritage rehabilitations to municipal Heritage Conservation Districts, makes her an exceptional asset to the Township’s heritage conservation efforts.

Sabina will be actively supporting Rideau Lakes MHAC in its pursuit of its key objectives, including:

  • Research: Provide research and advice to the Council on identifying, designating, and conserving heritage resources.
  • Collaboration: Active cooperation with the Township’s five historical societies.
  • Indigenous Recognition: A sincere commitment to Indigenous research and recognition to ensure that Indigenous heritage is rightfully acknowledged and protected.
  • Digital Archive: Establishing a digital archive to preserve valuable historical records and resources for posterity.
  • Heritage Events: Organizing engaging heritage events to educate, inspire, and unite the community with its rich heritage.
  • Historical Markers: Curating and installing historic plaques and storyboards that narrate the unique history of Rideau Lakes.
  • Heritage Mapping: Creating an interactive Heritage Map, including walking and driving tours.
  • Cemetery Preservation: A commitment to maintaining local cemeteries, further honoring the heritage and history they hold.

Sabina’s appointment to MHAC symbolizes the Township’s unwavering commitment to fulfilling its heritage goals. With her expertise, dedication, and passion, Sabina is poised to make significant contributions to the conservation of Rideau Lakes’ rich heritage. Congratulations, Sabina! We’re excited to see the impact of your contributions in the months and years to come.
