Strategies for Reducing Energy Consumption – AIC Webinar

The AIC Sustainability Committee and the Icon Sustainability Network recently organized a free webinar series titled “Conversations with Change Makers – Strategies for Reducing the Energy Consumption of Buildings.” The webinars are being held from February 22 to March 15, and feature several change makers from the field of architecture, engineering, and sustainability, who shared their insights and experiences in implementing energy-saving solutions for buildings.

The speakers included Michael K. Ramage, an architect and engineer who discussed the importance of sustainable design principles in reducing the energy consumption of buildings; John Ochsendorf, a structural engineer who highlighted the potential of retrofitting existing buildings to achieve energy savings; and Nancy Bell, an energy consultant who emphasized the role of education and awareness in promoting sustainable building practices. The speakers also explored new technologies that lower greenhouse gas emissions and discussed the importance of collaboration and communication between different stakeholders in achieving sustainable outcomes.

The energy used to heat, cool, de/humidify, and light buildings is one of the biggest environmental impacts of the cultural heritage sector, and the webinar series provided valuable information and inspiration for conservators and other cultural heritage professionals who are interested in reducing the energy consumption of their buildings.

By questioning the value of a one-size-fits-all approach to indoor environmental parameters and implementing meaningful changes related to energy consumption, the field can contribute to a more sustainable future. The webinar series emphasizes the potential for new technologies and the importance of collaboration and education in achieving energy savings.
