On Friday, June 3rd, MTBA’s Mark Thompson Brandt will be presenting at the first event in a series of forums organized by Just Transitions: Heritage Education for Climate Adaptation (JTHECA), a recent initiative by Canadian academic members of the Climate Heritage Network (CHN) and the National Roundtable for Heritage Education aiming to bring heritage education up to date with our changing environmental and political climate. The series is part of the ICOMOS University Forum: Knowledge Areas for Heritage Education, organized by the organized by Canadian academic members of the Climate Heritage Network and the National Roundtable for Heritage Education.
As part of a panel of experts, Mark will be sharing his expertise on the inextricable relationship between building reuse and climate adaptation/mitigation and its increasing relevancy – and urgency(!)- in our work as heritage professionals.
As a society, we have been grappling with challenges relating to climate change, social inequality and more for a long time – and MTBA recognizes the heritage sector has a valuable role to play in the solution! With the goal of bringing together educators and multi-disciplinary professionals to bridge the gap, JTHECA launches the discussion by asking:
“How can we adapt and transition heritage conservation education to address the growing impacts of climate change and the need for more diverse voices to contribute in setting priorities for adaptation?”
The discussions which ensue will help define the role of the heritage sector in tackling these challenges and explore means of aligning educational programs in heritage to better support the ongoing and future needs of our communities.
This first event, titled Knowledge Areas for Heritage Education, is organized in partnership with ICOMOS/ICOMOS Canada and will take place online June 3rd – June 4th, 2022. Topics to be covered include: Climate Impacts and Heritage Vulnerability; Building/Urban Adaptation and Resilience; Materials/Resources, Reuse and Equity; and Social Justice, Indigenous Knowledge and Governance. Future events to continue the discussion are planned for Fall 2022.
