24 Sussex: “Local Architecture Firm (MTBA) Offers Plan For Zero Carbon Reno”: And the conversation continues …

Toronto Star National Columnist and CBC-TV “At Issue” Panelist Althia Raj has written a passionate column for keeping this “National Treasure.” Raj starts the column with, “Please don’t tear it down.”

Raj cites many sources for the article and includes reference to MTBA’s proposal for a “Radical Renovation”: a deep-green rehabilitation and retrofit with a new companion contemporary building to accommodate the modern expanded functions of the Prime Minister’s home, hosting various events such as receptions and cabinet meetings.

Indeed, the residence is historically significant. The 34 room residence, built in 1867, is the official residence of the Prime Minister and is worthy of the utmost care. The only viable solution–a rigorous rehabilitation strategy. In 2017, MTBA proposed a deep-green retrofit as part of an unsolicited contribution to the public discourse around the property’s future. The design makes best use of existing heritage resources and through new interventions takes the property to a zero-carbon level of environmental responsibility.
