Exciting news @ Carbon Smart Building Day, September 11, 2018

Carbon Smart Building Day on September 11, 2018 has officially sold out!

Mark Thompson Brandt of MTBA will be leading Best Practices for Delivering Deep Energy & Carbon Upgrades at Carbon Smart Building Day, taking place during the Global Climate Action Summit. Brandt’s session focuses on reuse of an existing building vs demolish/build new, as the first step toward sustainability. To get to net zero carbon from existing buildings, we must go beyond changing light bulbs and upgrading HVAC.  Building Owners & Design Teams must deliver deep reductions in building energy demand and carbon emissions (both embodied and operating) using strategies like whole building ecology and bundling of measures.  There is a strong business case for doing so.  His session will explore best practices for deep green building rehab solutions that can scale, and challenge attendees to advance these practices to “standard”.

The team at Carbon Smart Building Day has been working to develop and shape this event by partnering with over 30 NGOs to pull together an exciting program with the goal to provide concrete steps that governments, corporations, organizations and individuals can take to lead the industry transformation necessary to realize the vision of a Net Zero Carbon (NZC) built environment:

  1. New Buildings – Operations and Embodied Emissions. All new buildings and developments are NZC by 2030, with increase in carbon-storing material use.
  2. Existing Buildings – Operations and Embodied Emissions. Extend building lifespan to 100 + years and retrofit existing buildings to NZC operations by 2050.
  3. Health and Equity – All new building (material production, construction, and use) is healthy, equitable and just.

One of the key objectives of the event is to build upon the growing global consensus on these targets.  Help make the day (Tuesday Sept 11th) have more impact by signing the declaration (as either an individual or an organization).
