TRACE’s Mark Thompson Brandt invited to speak at the ULI Spring Meeting in Toronto, May 16-18

The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is the world’s oldest and largest network of cross-disciplinary real estate and land use experts, all with a mission to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities around the globe. With headquarters in the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions, it is a pretty big deal that this group is coming to Toronto for their big semi-annual conference. And it is a BIG event – over 4000 planners, property owners, architects, engineers, developers and other real estate professionals from around the world are expected to attend. Toronto, and its development projects, will be highlighted on the tours and the region will be presented as a leader and innovator within North America in many ways.

Mark will be part of a panel session on Retrofitting Historic Buildings to Achieve Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability

“Around 75 percent of the global building stock in 2040 will be buildings that already exist today. This means that retrofitting existing structures is key to our push toward decarbonization and equity. Historic buildings are particularly well positioned to carry the mantle due to their cultural significance, income-generating potential (both directly and indirectly), and governmental incentives available to owners and developers. For this session, stakeholders from different fields of expertise within historic preservation and development will offer their perspectives on how best to join forces to preserve the past for a sustainable future. A candid discussion of available tools, challenges, and barriers, as well as case studies and examples, will be presented.”
