Interest Our Environment Shapes Us
As a registered OAA Intern Architect, I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of different projects as I gain experience on my path to licensing. As a young professional, I strive to gain a better understanding of the built environment around me, with a focus on design, building science, and sustainability.
I believe that the environment in which we surround ourselves with is vitally important in determining who we are, and I believe that architecture plays a big role in that development. I have a keen interest in exploring the effects that the built environment has on people.
Design aspects like the impacts of color on our subconscious thoughts, or how built form influences our movement through a space, to how a construction detail could lead to improved occupant comfort – these are the types of things that fascinate me.

Vibrant Cities
My M.Arch thesis focused on the potential effects an architectural intervention would have on the built environment. My proposal called for the revitalization of Calgary, Alberta’s famous Calgary Stampede Grounds– an exhibition space which has always stood as the heartbeat of the city. The unfortunate reality of the grounds is that there is only a heartbeat during events, otherwise the space lays quiet with little to no activity.
My intervention proposed a move towards transit or pedestrian access only to remove the need for large sprawling parking lots. Doing this would allow for space to be opened up for parks, recreation, cafes or restaurants. Programs that would encourage daily use and breathe vibrancy into the area when events aren’t taking place. Programs that would allow for this large area in the heart of Calgary to beat all the time.
