The Climate Heritage Network’s Working Group 3, “Building Reuse is Climate Action!”, has prepared contributions to COP 26, the United Nations’ Environmental Conference in Glasgow in November, 2021. As a component of a series of “pre-COP” activities, Historic England’s Climate Fridays is being devoted to presentations of these learning opportunities. On Friday, October 8th, WG3 will take a deep dive into Building Reuse & Decarbonization through Policy Development, Design/Decision-Making Tools and Case Studies, with an international panel of experts.
One of the Case Studies features the SJAM Building, an adaptive reuse, rehabilitation, retrofit and addition to a 1930’s banking hall into a Hall of State for Canada’s House of Commons. This project was done for PSPC by NORR in Association with MTBA Associates, Architecture*Urbanism*Conservation. MTBA were also the Heritage Conservation Architects for the project, for all aspects of heritage intervention design and heritage value protection, leading an integrated team of 32 disciplines and specialists, including sustainability. The project was mandated to achieve a 3 Green Globes rating but instead achieved a 5 Green Globes rating, the highest and a showpiece for decarbonizing building reuse projects.
MTBA’s Mark Thompson Brandt is an introductory speaker and Moderator Chair of this 90 minute session. Brandt, who is an International Steering Committee Member of CHN is the co-lead of WG3 (with ZNCC Co-chair Lori Ferriss and California State Preservation Officer Juli Polanco), a team of dozens of dedicated professionals, globally diverse volunteers in the fight to achieve 1.5 degrees maximum warming by 2050.
