The Association for Preservation Technology (APT) Ottawa Valley-Outaouais Chapter is hosting an online event Thursday June 3 2021, from 4:30-6pm ET, to showcase some of the chapter’s youngest voices in preservation technology. Recent graduates, scholars and professionals will be sharing their experiences with APT conferences and committees, followed by an open Q&A.
MTBA’s Intern Architect and Heritage Specialist Carly Farmer, and Architectural Intern Catherine McBain, will be sharing their involvement with APT. Carly Farmer will be sharing how her involvement with APT influenced her studies and career as a young professional specializing in sustainable heritage conservation at MTBA Associates. Since starting grad school in 2014, Carly has been actively involved in the APT Technical Committee for Sustainable Preservation’s (TC-SP) OSCAR focus group and since 2018 has been co-chairing the development of this tool – the Online Sustainable Conservation Assistance Resource. Carly was an APT Student Scholar in 2016 at the San Antonio conference where she presented her work on OSCAR while interning at MTBA under a Mitacs grant.
Catherine will be presenting her research from summer 2020 with Carleton University’s Professor Mariana Esponda, on the status and evolution of concrete in the National Capital Region (NCR). Her work focuses on the historical conception and use of concrete, discussing the intersecting historical narratives of mixes, techniques, and technologies. Catherine interned at MTBA Associates and the APT TC-SP’s OSCAR focus group, consolidating knowledge on the use of concrete in the NCR and beyond. Her research includes numerous local case studies such as the “Carbide” Willson Mill and the Lester B. Pearson Building. Catherine has been selected as an APT Student Scholar for the second consecutive year, to present her research at the virtual APT conference in October.
