Editor’s note: MTBA are the principal authors of a new document called “Building Resilience: Practical Guidelines to Sustainable Rehabilitation of Buildings in Canada” which is due for publication in Spring, 2015. Commissioned by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Collaboration (FPT) on Historic Places, what follows is an introduction to the publication from client-side lead, BC Heritage.

“Heritage conservation contributes to creating sustainable built  environments and resilient communities.”  the statement above is the foundational principle behind a new guidance  document scheduled for publication in the spring of 2015. Building Resilience:  Practical Guidelines for the Sustainable Rehabilitation of Buildings in Canada, is the  result of a collaboration between Parks Canada’s Federal, Provincial and Territorial  Collaboration (FPT) on Historic Places and the BC Heritage Branch.

Recognition of the connection between heritage and sustainability has become  almost mainstream since we reported on Heritage Branch sustainability initiatives  and partnerships in the spring 2011 Heritage BC Quarterly.  All levels of government  are developing policies and programs to strengthen and support capacity building  in this field, securing a significant position for historic place conservation…
